SEED FUND AWARDS $45,000 TO PROGRAMS THAT ATTRACT GIRLS AND WOMEN TO IT

Boulder, Colo. – July 15, 2008 - The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) today announced the 3rd-round winners of its Academic Alliance Seed Fund.

The proposal deadline for Round 4 of the NCWIT Academic Alliance Seed Fund is November 1, 2008.  Read below for more information about the Seed Fund and proposal guidelines.

ROUND 3 WINNERS

  • Columbia University will use its $15,000 award to increase the enrollment of female students in computer science courses beyond CS1, and ultimately to increase the number of female CS majors. The Emerging Scholars Program will encourage active participation and discussion of CS-related topics in a more positive, relaxed and open environment.
  • “Are You Smarter than your Fifth Grader?” at Purdue University will engage an influential population, parents, with pair programming via six workshops per semester.  This program is open to 24 student/adult pairs and will be offered free of charge.
  • Towson University will use Multi-Level Mentoring to implement a program model that will combine elements of both intentional role modeling and peer-led team learning, toward the ultimate goal of showing all female undergraduates pathways to success in computing. The award is $15,000.

The NCWIT Academic Alliance Seed Fund awards members of NCWIT's Academic Alliance with start-up funds (up to $15,000 per project) to develop and implement initiatives for recruiting and retaining women in computing and information technology. We thank Microsoft Research for its initial funding of the Seed Fund.
